She was just about to leave for work when the wave hit from the heavens above. It resembled the breaking of a huge dam, except there was no body of water nearby. These were not dust pounding summer rain drops or delicate dew drops, it was simply a wall of water approaching. She couldn't have been prepared for it, nor could she have warned the others. The water started pouring at a staggering rate, she got enveloped in it almost instantaneously. The wave swept her along the corridor and as she was trying to find something to hold on to, it dawned on her that drowning was probably imminent...
Her first thought went out to her mother... will she be safe... is she going to be able to get out... will she survive? She scoured her mind to come up with something she could do to help, but there was nothing there, except the void of imminent death.
Her second thought went out to the little ones. She knew they had no chance... If only someone could have predicted this... her mind couldn't comprehend how such a catastrophe could have unraveled.
She suddenly hit the wall in one of the sharp turns and her delicate body almost snapped. She did not regain equilibrium, however her proprioception did not go completely amiss. The water was now everywhere, filling the corridor up to its ceiling. She could feel the vibration of the cascading water in the walls.
And then, everything went still. Air bubbling here and there only accentuated the motionlessness... She knew her body would fail soon... And then she saw her... Floating slowly through the stillness of the water... The last image registering in her brain was that of her mother... Struggling for air, it was clear that she wouldn't make it either... Death slowly set in...
....
- Do you think they're dead already? I would really like to go back inside the house! Mummy called us in for lunch 10 minutes ago and I only have 2% battery left on my phone?
- Be patient! I really want to see whether the queen makes it to the surface! If she does and I kill her, I won the battle!
- Oh Marcus, you and your stupid battles! Killing some ants with a bucket of hot soapy water doesn't make you a general!
- Does too!! Anyway, you cannot understand the intricacies of my battle!
- True! 'cause I'm a lady and ladies don't waste their time on nonsense!
- Right Erika! Staring at your phone playing "Magic Pony"makes all the sense in the world!
- Let's not get into who plays what mister "I don't know who installed "Call of Duty" on my computer Mommy!" And now if you''ll excuse me I am going to lunch!
Glancing briefly at the small mound next to which the now empty bucket sat, the girl turned away and started trotting towards the house.
The boy stayed behind but not for long. He was hungry and got bored waiting for the queen. Pensively, he mumbled ""Meh, I now declare the Queen dead. Victory is mine!!", then quickly turned around and ran off to catch his sister.
